Hotel Sou
A sustainability-driven mountain lodge in the Japanese Alps, built with local timber and powered by Hakuba's pristine spring water.
About this stay
Hotel Sou represents a new generation of Japanese mountain hospitality — one built on ecological principles without sacrificing design or comfort. Located in Hakuba at the foot of the Northern Japanese Alps, the lodge uses locally harvested timber, draws its water from mountain springs, and partners with local farmers for its restaurant. The architecture is deliberately understated, letting the surrounding alpine landscape be the star. In winter, powder snow; in summer, alpine wildflowers.

I have never used here as an inn, so the following review is only about the hot spring. I would say that this Matsushiro hot spring is one of the best in Japan. It warms my body from the core and continues for a long time. I also come when I have back pain. JPY600 within tax is unbelievably cheap for me. Huge car park is available. If you just take the hot spring, pay the machine and hand it to the reception to enter.
I visited here for a day trip. The water is 100% natural hot spring without circulation. The water is cloudy brown with a smell of iron. The facilities are clean and there are many showers for body wash.
This golden onsen is one of my favorites in Japan! When you visit Matsushiro or Nagano city, don't miss this nice onsen!
Small onsen area. Good for ryokan experience. Staffs are friendly! No smoking area.
A very special hot spring with an iron smell. Loved it! 😊
